Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has backed calls for Kwesi Appiah to return as the next Black Stars coach.
The former Kotoko star is viewed by many as the ideal man to replace Avram Grant, three years after he was sacked by the football association.
The Black Stars job became vacant in February following the resignation of Avram Grant after Ghana’s uninspiring performance at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
Even though over 70 coaches have applied for the job, former President Kufuor wants the Ghana Football Association to hand the job to Appiah.
“I love Kwasi, I would support him 100% but I don’t know what is wrong with Ghana. Somehow we tend to believe that the foreigner, the white person is the right person to coach,” President Kufuor told Starr FM’s Henry Asante Twum in an exclusive interview.
Mr. Kufuor added “I don’t see it that way, I believe in the individual. You may get a white coach who is a master and I believe in this day and age, you may get a black coach who is also a master.”
The former Asante Kotoko Chairman added “If you are lucky to have such a person in your country. Ofcourse, you should pay the person as you would pay a white because it’s a global market.
“I believe he will do exceptionally well. He is performing well in Sudan so why shouldn’t he come back to do it for us? I would support his coming back.”
Appiah paid the ultimate prize after being sacked following Ghana’s questionable display at the 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign in Brazil.
