The paramount chief of the Lawra Traditional Area Naa Pouwele Karbo III is backing President Akufo-Addo’s fight against galamsey.
Describing the menace as “madness”, the traditional leader pledged his full support for the campaign.
“We are ready to support the president end this illegal mining in the country. I was happy when the president said he does not mind losing the 2020 elections. So tell him that he has supporters who are willing to help him end this madness,” Naa Karbo said when the Upper West Regional Minister Suleiman Alhassan called on him.
“It is not right to allow illegal mining to occur throughout the country at the same time. We those in the North should be spared this due to the fragile nature of our soil. We don’t have what those in the South have so we must protect our land,” he added.
Lawra, which is about 78 kilometers from the Upper West regional capital Wa, shares border with Burkina Faso and has recorded some cases of illegal mining. This the Paramount Chief said is of concern to him hence he had directed other chiefs in the area to report any cases of illegal mining to him for prompt action to be taken.
