Former Ghana defender Samuel Osei Kuffour believes Ghana Football lacks the required quality to enable Ghanaian players win CAF Footballer of the Year Awards.
Speaking at Monday’ nominees ceremony at the Movenpick Hotel in Accra, the former Bayern Munich legend said he was not surprised no Ghanaian made the final three for the 2017 CAF Awards.
Abedi Ayew won the award for the third successive time in 1993, his son Andre Ayew, Asamoah Gyan and Michael Essien have all come close to winning the accolade.
Sammy Kuffour, who lost the African Footballer of the Year Award to Nwankwo Kanu and El Hadji Diouf in 1999 and 2001, says Ghana football needs an upgrade that will affect the production of quality players.
“These days the performances of our players are not up to the standard, so I am not surprised. As a country we need to upgrade to a higher level in terms of football.
“We need to sit up and find the best way to get the likes of the Abedi Peles, Tony Yeboahs, Michael Essiens and the Sammy Kuffuors you use to know,” he told Starr Sports.
