Ghana’s Andre and Jordan Ayew are on the verge of suffering relegation from the English Premier League after taking part in Swansea City’s 1-0 home loss to Southampton on Tuesday night.

Chances were at a premium in the hard-fought affair at the Liberty Stadium, with the clearest regularly falling to Southampton striker Charlie Austin, who found Lukasz Fabianksi equal to everything he could throw at him.

Jordan Ayew, who worked his socks off came close to breaking the deadlock midway through the second stanza with long curling drive but goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was equal to the task as he parried the ball over the crossbar.

However, Manolo Gabbiadini’s second-half goal helped the Saints to a nerve-shredding 1-0 win – which plunged Swansea City deep into the relegation quagmire.

The win moves Southampton into 16th place in the Premier League – ahead of Huddersfield Town on goal difference – and they know they will be safe if they avoid defeat against Manchester City on the final day of the season this Sunday.

It is looking increasingly bleak for the 18th-placed Swans, who need to beat Stoke City at the weekend and hope that Huddersfield fail to pick up any points against Chelsea and Arsenal in their remaining two games or that Saints lose heavily to Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions.

Jordan and Ayew lasted full minutes of action.
