The Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) is calling for establishment of tighter Security for Judges and Lawyers in the discharge of their constitutional duties amid growing hostilities and verbal threats against the judiciary.
According to the Association, the trend of attacks on court and threats on the judiciary in recent times is an indication that requires review of security system for the protection of Judges in the country to ensure that they are secured in the discharge of their constitutional mandate.
Francis Polley, Vice President of the Eastern Region branch of GBA said this during the commemoration of the 36th Martyrs Day been held at the Koforidua High Court.
Thirty-six years ago, on Thursday, July 1, 1982, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation reported a news item that sounded routine and unnecessary initially. All Judges, it was announced were to be provided with armed security for their protection.
Soon, it was announced officially that three high court judges and a retired Army officer had been abducted and murdered during the curfew hours of June 30, 1982.
Mr. Justice Fred Poku Sarkodee, Mrs. Justice Cecilia Koranteng-Addo, and Mr. Justice Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong, all Judges of the High Court and Major Acquah, a retired army officer had been brutally and savagely murdered on the night of their abduction.
According to Lawyer Francis Polley, this incident must be prevented and should never happen again in the country.
He charged Judiciary to continuously remain firm in upholding the tenants that the slain Judges stood for to protect the constitution of Ghana.
