At least 300 residents in three communities in the Agortime-Ziope District of the Volta region have been displaced by floods following the overflow of River Tordze.
Emanating from Togo, Tordze runs through the southern parts of the Volta region to the ocean.
The situation, according to Starr News’ Volta Regional Correspondent Edwards Williams, has affected livelihood and academic activities in the communities.
Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), according to him are already in the communities, ensuring the evacuation of residents there to take shelter on safer grounds as the level of water continues to rise.
The Deputy Volta Region NADMO Director in charge of Operation told Starr News that “economically, most of their [residents’] farms have been flooded. They have submerged. We have some of them displaced, livelihood has been affected [with] most children not being able to go to school.”
Four communities; Agorhokpo, Azametikofe, Akpaligakofe and Fulanikofe are completely cut off due to the overflow. According to the Regional NADMO Director, they are finding it difficult to get to the people there in order to provide them with relief items and possibly evacuate them.
“How do we get to this people now? We can’t go by foot or by car. The only means that we will use is a boat,” he said.
He said rescue team have been requested from Accra to come and salvage the situation.
