The Council of the University of Ghana (UG) has appointed Prof. Lydia Aziato as the first substantive Dean for the University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery (SoNM).
A communique issued Tuesday, July 16 said the Council considered and approved Prof Aziato’s appointment during its meeting held on July 15. The appointment has attracted excitements in the nursing and midwifery profession. The nursing and midwifery fraternity has congratulated her for “this much deserved” appointment.
Prof Aziato replaced Prof Ernestina Donkor, as acting Dean from 2017 to 2019 and with her attainment of the rank of Associate Professor, she has now been appointed as the substantive Dean by the council of UG.
With the appointment of Lydia, UG has gotten its first Dean of SoNM, since it was granted a school status in 2003.
The University of Ghana School of Nursing and Midwifery is a constituent School of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana. The School was established as a WHO project in 1963, to train nurses and midwives at the tertiary level in Ghana. The School has seen tremendous advancement over the years due to the commitment, diligence and hard work of its leadership, faculty and staff.
As the leading institution in providing academic and professional training in Nursing and Midwifery in Ghana at the undergraduate and graduate levels, the School has provided the sub-region with well-trained nurses and midwives who are in various leadership positions within the country and across the globe.
Currently, the School runs several programmes, including BSc. Midwifery and Nursing (with options in Community Health Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Paediatric Nursing and General Nursing), MSc. Nursing (Regular and Sandwich options), MPhil. Paediatric Nursing, MPhil. Nursing (Regular and Sandwich options). A PhD in Nursing programme is slated to commence in August 2020.
The Department of Nursing obtained a School status on July 15, 2003, and ever since, all the Deans were appointed as ‘Acting Dean’ as follows:
Dr Mary Opare: 2003 – 2006
Prof. Onike P. Rodrigues: 2006 – 2009
Prof. Ernestina S. Donkor: 2009 – 2017
Dr Lydia Aziato – 2017- 2019
As providence may have it on 15th July 2019 – 16yrs after the attainment of the status of a School.
