2024 election: Ghanaians will decide your successor – Asah Asante to Akufo-Addo

The senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana–Legon, Dr. Asah Asante says Ghanaians will decide the next President of Ghana and not President Akufo-Addo.

This comes on the back of President Akufo-Addo reiterating his call on Ghanaians to vote for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the impending 2024 General Election.

He further stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer, John Mahama cannot succeed him adding that he will destroy his legacy if Ghanaians should make him take over as the next President.

However, Mr. John Mahama has replied President Akufo-Addo indicating that he will not continue Akufo-Addo’s legacy of corruption, misgovernance, and arrogance.

“Of course, I will not protect your ‘legacy’ of corruption, misgovernance, arrogance, ineptitude, bankrupt economy, increased unemployment, and pushing more of our people into the poverty bracket,” the NDC flag bearer stated in a tweet.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Francis Abban on Thursday, the senior political science lecturer explained that the Constitution, the land does not give an individual power to decide who leads the people.

“For all those making the statement, the good news is that it doesn’t lie in the month of the President to make that statement to the extent of suggesting that he has to cause something to happen before it can happen, no. We decide who to lead us at a point in time and when I say we I mean the electorates.

“If you read the Constitution it is absolutely clear that the government springs from the sovereign will of the people. We the people decide who should be our leader at a point in time. So Mr. President can be excited by his own statement but the reality is that we will decide.

“If they believe that they want to continue with the NPP the people will speak in that fashion, if they decide that enough of the NPP work has been done they don’t want them and they should give way for another party to come in Ghanaians will decide. So yes Mr. President can excite himself but Ghanaians will decide,” Dr. Asante stated.
