The three pre-tertiary teacher unions have resolved to return to the classroom with immediate effect after a two week long strike action.
Basic and Senior High Schools have been without teachers after the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT); Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) AND the National Association Of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) laid down their tools on the 24th March April 2024.
Among other things the teachers took the action to demand better conditions of service cardinal among which were the renegotiation of their collective Bargaining AGREEMENTS particularly to do with professional development allowances, deprived area allowances, transport allowances, rent allowances, teaching and assessment allowances etc.
The National Labour Commission however sought an interlocutory injunction against their industrial action after declaring it inconsistent with the rules of engagement.
Addressing executives of the teacher unions, national chairman of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers King Ali Awudu indicated that the unions had decided to respect the court’s orders to resume work.
“As law abiding citizens having respect for the courts we therefore declare the strike that was called on the 24th of March 2024 called off and ask all our members and staff of pretertiary institutions to resume work with immediate effect,” he announced.
The unions further urged government to immediately continue negotiations with all parties to address all outstanding concerns.
“We urge the employer led by the ministry of employment and labour relations to resume negotiations today April 2nd 2024, so we can expedite negotiations and come to a conclusion to forestall any other happenings in the future,” Ali Awudu stated.
He commended teachers for their immense support throughout the process and assured that the executives of the unions would stop at nothing to ensure all their demands are honoured in the best interest of the teachers.
