The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has firmly refuted claims of tension between two of its top officials, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, and the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Bismarck Onwona.
The allegations were made in the Wednesday, July 31, 2024, edition of The Herald newspaper.
In a statement issued by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations for the GAF, the military command stressed that there is no discord between the CDS and COAS, nor within the ranks of the GAF. The statement emphasized the harmonious relationship that exists among the military’s senior leadership and urged the public to disregard the publication.
“GAF wishes to assure all ranks and the public that there is a cordial relationship amongst the military high command. As such, we entreat all and sundry to disregard the publication and treat it with the contempt it deserves,” read the statement.
The GAF also took the opportunity to remind the media of the importance of accurate reporting, urging them to avoid disseminating misinformation that could damage the morale of troops and the public’s trust in the military. The statement called for support from all sectors to allow military leaders to focus on their operational and administrative duties to maintain national security.
“We wish to once again urge the media to refrain from spreading misinformation that could undermine the integrity and morale of troops as well as the trust of the public in the Armed Forces. We call on all to support the leadership of the military to focus on their operational and administrative responsibilities to ensure a safe and secured country,” the statement added.
The GAF encouraged the public to seek information through official channels and to respect the military’s open-door policy for communication.
This denial comes amid a backdrop of increasing scrutiny of the military’s internal affairs and emphasizes the GAF’s commitment to transparency and integrity.
