Former President John Dramani Mahama has rejected allegations by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has failed to deliver developmental projects in the Volta Region, despite the region’s longstanding support for the party.
Addressing a durbar of chiefs and people at Juapong in the North Tongu Constituency as part of his #Mahama4Change campaign, Mahama described the NPP’s claims as a deliberate attempt to undermine the NDC for political gain.
Mahama emphasized that the NDC has been the driving force behind the majority of infrastructure development in the Volta Region. He argued that projects initiated by NDC governments often stall when the NPP comes to power, slowing progress in the region.
“In Rawlings’ time, the NPP used to get single digits in the Volta Region. By 2020, they climbed to 14%, meaning they are making inroads. Now, what do they do? They use propaganda to tell you that NDC has done nothing for you, despite the visible progress made under NDC governments,” Mahama said.
He highlighted various development projects in the region, including roads, electricity, water, education, and healthcare, which he credited to the NDC. Mahama pointed out that key road projects like the Juapong-Adidome Road, which was 80% complete under his administration, were left unfinished after the NDC left office.
“Look at the road from Juapong to Podoe to Abutia; we had a contractor working on it. That road should have been long finished by now. As soon as we left office, the work came to a standstill,” he added.
Mahama’s comments are part of his broader campaign to reclaim the presidency in the upcoming elections, as he continues to rally support across the country, particularly in regions where the NDC has traditionally been strong.
