The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama is against the deployment of soldiers to polling stations and coalition centers in the upcoming December 7th 2024 general elections.

He emphasized that election security rests solely in the hands of the police.

John Mahama made these remarks during the launch of the National Peace Campaign initiative over the weekend in Accra.

“No weapons must be allowed in or around any polling stations, including all coalition centers. Election security is a primary responsibility of the Ghana Police Service under the Inspector General of Police. There must therefore be no deployment of the military or armed national security operatives at any polling station or coalition centre.

“The electoral commission must be impartial and the judiciary must be fair and neutral in the event of any election disputes. Justice is a necessary imperative for peace. And I note the caution of the National Security Minister, Kan Dapaah, who a while ago cautioned that loss of trust in the justice system can lead to people taking matters into their own hands.”
