Presidential Candidate of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has lashed out at the government for what he described as misappropriation of a $11.5 billion loan facility for developmental programs during their tenure in office.

He claimed that such funds under his leadership as president could have been used for tangible projects that could turn Ghana into a developed place like Dubai.

Speaking during a special prayer service with the Muslim Community at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Mahama pointed out that the loan of $3.5 billion obtained under his erstwhile NDC administration financed major infrastructure projects such as the harbor, Terminal 3 at Kotoka International Airport and other significant developments.

“Within 5 years they borrowed $11.5bn. And I am telling you, with the four years I was in office what I did – the harbors, the new airports and other infrastructure projects – we borrowed $3.5bn. If I were the one who had the $11.5bn loan facility, Ghana would have become Dubai,” the former head of state said to applause.

He also assured the Muslim Community that, the next NDC government will transform the Hajj Village in Accra into a permanent structure for improved service delivery.

Mr. Mahama is currently in the Ashanti Region and is expected to wrap up his tour and return to Accra on Thursday.
