The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has demanded that the Electoral Commission (EC) reverse what it describes as illegal parliamentary victory declarations made by individuals not authorized by the Commission.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, December 11,Alexander Afenyo Markin, the leader of the NPP caucus in Parliament, accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of engaging in unlawful activities following the 2024 elections.
Markin pointed out that several NDC supporters, rather than official election officers, were making declarations of victory in various constituencies.
He named several constituencies, including Dome Kwabenya, Ablekuma North, and Okai Kwesi Central, as being among those where these unauthorized declarations were taking place.
According to Markin, such actions undermined the credibility of the electoral process and needed to be addressed immediately.
He urged the EC to take swift action to nullify these illegal declarations, emphasizing the need to uphold the integrity of the election results.
The NPP also accused the NDC of fuelling chaos and violence following the election results, citing the situation in Ablekuma North where NPP candidate Akua Afriyie was allegedly threatened by NDC militants.
Markin called on the EC and the Inspector General of Police to ensure that safety and order were maintained at collation centers and that the electoral process remained free from interference.
“The NDC after winning power will resort to create an atmosphere of lawlessness threatening parliamentary candidates, threatening party officials, threatening anybody they see as a ‘threat’ so called”, he began.
“In Ablekuma North for instance the parliamentary candidate there is under siege. Yesterday she had a sleepless night, all manner of persons were at her residence in search of pink sheet. Madam Akua Afriyie had to run for her life, it took the timely intervention of the police to protect her and to drive these NDC hologons away”, he said
“Today the NDC leadership pretends that what their party foot soldiers are doing are being done on their blind side but they are encouraging it”. We are calling in the civil society to call the NDC leadership especially John Mahama to demonstrate his love for this country by stopping this action immediately. National headquarters should intervene.”
“The chairperson of the EC should intervene and respond positively to all petitions brought before them and address these matters. The EC must take immediate steps to reverse these illegal declarations, which were not based on properly collated results,”
