Unknown individuals have allegedly vandalised a portion of President Akufo-Addo’s statue, located near the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in the Western Region.
The statue, which was unveiled on November 6 during President Akufo-Addo’s one-day “thank you” tour of the region, has sparked widespread public debate.
While some have criticized the monument, including National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, who questioned its purpose and described it as self-congratulatory rather than a genuine tribute.
There have also been calls for its removal, especially following the anticipated defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections.
In response to the growing discontent, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a Senior Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, cautioned that any attempt to dismantle or destroy the statue would be illegal.
He emphasised that the state holds the sole authority over such monuments and any decisions regarding their removal or preservation.
Despite these warnings, reports suggest that some unknown individuals have defaced part of the statue, raising concerns about the growing tensions surrounding the controversial monument.
