Ghana is set to host a major continental sporting event as the 2026 African Armwrestling Championship kicks off on May 1 at the Borteyman Sports Complex.
The two-day competition is expected to draw significant attention, with more than 300 athletes already in the country ahead of the tournament.
Participants from over 20 African nations – confirmed to be 23 countries – will compete in various weight and skill categories, all aiming to secure medals for their countries. Beyond national pride, the championship also serves as a qualifying pathway for the 2027 African Games, adding further stakes to the competition.
The event underscores the growing popularity of armwrestling across Africa, with increased participation and improved standards in recent years. Organizers believe the championship will not only showcase elite talent but also help further develop the sport across the continent.

Meanwhile, President of the African Armwrestling Federation, Charles Osei-Asibey, has expressed confidence in the success of this year’s tournament. Speaking in an exclusive interview with EIB Sports, he indicated that preparations have been thorough and expectations are high.
Osei-Asibey believes the 2026 edition will surpass previous championships in both organization and competition level, as Ghana once again positions itself as a key hub for armwrestling development in Africa.
