Yirenkyi’s last-gasp heroics lift Ghana as Black Stars edge Panama in World Cup Opener

Ghana launched their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in dramatic fashion, defeating Panama 1-0 thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Caleb Yirenkyi in a tense Group L encounter in Toronto.

The Black Stars looked destined to settle for a frustrating draw before Yirenkyi struck in the 95th minute to hand Ghana all three points.

For much of the contest, Panama appeared the more dangerous side, creating the better opportunities in the opening half and forcing Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi into several important saves before he was replaced at halftime through injury.

Ghana gradually grew into the game after the break, with Jonas Adjetey and Jordan Ayew going close as Carlos Queiroz’s side increased the pressure.

Just when a goalless draw seemed inevitable, substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante burst down the left and delivered a dangerous ball across goal. Yirenkyi arrived at the perfect moment to turn it home, sparking wild celebrations among the Ghana players and supporters.

The victory gives Ghana a priceless start in a difficult group and places the Black Stars second in Group L behind England, who earlier defeated Croatia 4-2. Both teams sit on three points after one match, though England lead on goal difference. Panama and Croatia remain without a point.

The result is a major boost for Ghana’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages. With England viewed as the group favourites, securing three points against Panama was crucial, and the Black Stars now head into their next fixture knowing another positive result could put them firmly on course for the Round of 32.

For Ghana, the mission is clear: build on this dramatic triumph and take the momentum into a blockbuster showdown with England. For Panama, the late heartbreak leaves little room for error as they prepare for a must-win clash against Croatia.
