Electricity tariffs to be reduced in next budget – Agyarko

Following the successful stabilization of power supply, government’s next move will be to reduce electricity tariffs, the Minister of Energy Boakye Agyarko has disclosed.

He revealed this Wednesday at a news conference in Accra.

“Our next mandate is to begin the reduction of pricing,” he hinted, adding: “We believe that through this budget to the end of the year, we should be able to start bringing prices down.”

The cost of power has been a source of worry to consumers and president Akufo-Addo promised during the 2016 electioneering that he would ensure the prices are reduced should he come into power.

Mr. Agyarko further noted that the government is working assiduously to reduce the cost of production and that it is getting a lot of cooperation.

In a separate development, Mr. Agyarko has told staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) demanding severance package as part of the company’s concession agreement to be prepared to leave their posts upon receipt of the package.

His comments come in the wake of protests by staff of the company Wednesday in the Eastern region in demand of their package.

In his reaction at a press conference Wednesday, Mr. Agyarko said, “…If you decide to leave ECG, then you will be paid your severance, but you should not have the expectation or guarantee that the new company will take you on.”

“You have made a decision to sever your relations with ECG, and it should not put you in faithful expectation that going forward you have a job with the new company. So it is opened, all the ECG workers who want to leave and not join the new company are at liberty to do so and their severance so arranged.”
