The Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Oquaye has stated that homosexuality will not be legally accepted and practiced in Ghana.
According to Prof. Oquaye, an overwhelming majority of the nation’s population strongly disapprove of legalising homosexuality in the country.
President Akufo Addo in an interview with Qatar-based Aljazeera said legalising homosexuality in Ghana is bound to happen if there is an overwhelming demand for it.
He, however, added that the issue is currently not a priority for Ghanaians.
The President’s comment has sparked tons of reactions from interest groups on the issue with some demanding that the President should be clear with his stance on the thorny issue.
In an interview with Starr News Professor mike Oquaye said he doesn’t foresee homosexuality being legalised in Ghana.
“The president said he will yield to what the people of Ghana want and ofcourse Parliament will also yield but I said Ghanaians we have our culture so we will not want that.
“We are Christians, so we will not want that, we are Muslims so we will not want that so where will it pass to come, that is my conclusion as a social scientist.
“It is against Christian ideals, it is against Muslim principles and it is also our moral upbringing so I don’t see how that is going to happen,” Prof. Oquaye said.
