The five-member Parliamentary ad-hoc committee investigating the cash for seat saga will begin its public sitting today, Thursday January 11, 2018.
Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Aaron Oquaye set up the bi-partisan committee to probe claims that the Trade Ministry extorted as much as $100,000 from expatriates to allow them to sit close to the President at the recently held Ghana Expatriates Business Awards.
The committee whose sitting will be opened to the public was formed after an emergency recall of the House at the behest of the minority, who have insisted there was a wrongdoing on the side of the ministry .
The trade minister Alan Kyerematen, his deputies as well as some of the business owners who attended the event are expected to be questioned by the Ameyaw Kyeremeh-led committee. Other members of the committee are Dr. Assibey Yeboah, Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament, and Yaw Buabeng Asamoah, MP for Adentan
The Speaker has said he expects the committee to be professional and timely with their work. Their report is expected on January 24.
Meanwhile, the Presidency has cleared the Trade ministry of any wrongdoing in the issue.
“The facts, as reported to the president, do not disclose any wrongdoing on the part of the Minister or any government official,” a statement from the Information minister said.
