The Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu has backed an assertion of a representative of the Conservative Party in the UK about wastage in the NPP on internal contests.
John Hayward at the NPP conference in Koforidua admonished the party against wasting resources on posters and billboards when same can be used in developing the nation.
“I came through the streets today, and I saw so many posters, posters of the wonderful candidates here in this conference. But I had to reflect. I think I saw more posters than the delegates here at this conference and I wondered, ‘is this really the best use of our resources?’” he quizzed.
“I have a lesson from the Conservative party which focus on the voters. Voters are less keen on parties that focus on their internal processes. And I hope you can benefit from my experience as I encourage you to go forth from here today and focus your time, efforts and resources in reaching out to the voters of Ghana,” he added.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, the Suame MP tasked political parties in the country to re-look at how it chooses its leaders.
According to the Mensah-Bonsu, the current regime does not only waste resources but breeds corruption too. He wants internal elections scrapped entirely.
“What we do, doesn’t exist anywhere in the established democracies. So we should do serious introspection and I have always called for this. Happily, what the man said really supports the view that I hold and as a party going forward we should have a second look at this, because it breeds unnecessary tensions.
“And it is not only for the NPP, the NDC is equally guilty…all the major political parties in this country are guilty,” he told Francis Abban.
He warned that: “…nobody is into politics as a Father Christmas and if we allow these things to happen, the person gets elected, he positioned himself to make good of the money that he has spent. If we want to fight corruption, I think it is one issues that we should consider as a nation and as political parties.”
