Dr. Asah Asante a political science lecturer and Director of the Center for European Studies, has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to ensure that the upcoming 2024 elections are conducted peacefully and smoothly. And the importance of the President’s role in addressing long-standing electoral challenges.
“We want our president to walk the talk by making sure that some of the challenges we have experienced over the years are on the path, if not completely eradicated, at least nipped in the bud, At the end of the day, we should be able to go to the election smoothly and announce the results smoothly. It’s important that we have that.”
Dr. Asante highlighted several key factors that are crucial for ensuring free and fair elections. Dr. Asante said “The one that he has a direct responsibility to ensure that it works, he should make sure that it works. Providing adequate security, making sure that security is top-notch, and then helping to deal with violence that has characterized us as a free and peaceful atmosphere for electoral processes to take place.”
Speaking on the Morningstar Dr. Asante acknowledged the efforts made by the government so far, Dr. Asante stressed the need for further action. “Yes, the government has been doing a lot in that direction, but we want more. Children of oliba, we want more,”
Dr. Asante elaborated on the need for improved electoral infrastructure and voter education. “It’s not just about security; it’s also about ensuring that the electoral commission is well-resourced and independent. Voter education is key to minimizing misunderstandings and disputes on election day. We need a comprehensive approach that covers all aspects of the electoral process.”
