VIDEO: Organized Labour strike suspension ill-timed – Labour analyst

Labour analyst, Seth Abloso has opined that Organized Labour should not have rushed into having a press conference on the 9th of October, 2024 since the deadline they gave the government was the 10th of October, 2024.

In a dramatic turn of events, Organized Labour has suspended its planned strike, initially scheduled for Thursday, October 10, 2024. This comes on the back of ongoing government efforts to address key issues, including the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The decision to suspend the strike follows a contentious meeting held by Organized Labour, during which members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and other unions staged a walkout.

The strike was expected to put pressure on the government to act swiftly on labor demands, particularly as illegal mining continues to pose significant environmental and economic challenges.

Speaking on Starr Today with Joshua Kodjo Mensa, Mr Abloso stated that Organized Labour should have had the press conference the next day, 10th of October, 2024 after having time to do careful deliberations on what the government had to offer.

“The deadline that Organized Labour gave was the 10th, if by the 10th it hadn’t, so perhaps they should not have rushed into a press conference this evening. They could have done the press conference tomorrow morning when they would have had time to do exhaustive deliberations on what the government was offering.

“For instance, I am hearing from some sections and some leaderships that I have spoken to say that ‘Organized labor should have demanded the release of all those in detention who were arrested for demonstrating against the negative impact of galamsey.’ The President should have directed the Attorney General to file a nolle prosequi in these matters.

“Because in the case of Kumasi where some forces (vigilante group) went to attack a court and a judge, and when they were being prosecuted, the Attorney General filed a nolle prosequi. So the same could have been demanded to be done for those who have been incarcerated. And that is why I am saying that organized labor should not have rushed to organize this press conference. Because the deadline they gave was the 10th. And the strike was to begin by their statement on the 11th”, the labour analyst narrated.
