The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed strong disapproval of the Speaker of Parliament’s decision to suspend three Minority Members of Parliament (MPs).
In a statement released on February 3, the party described the action as “selective and autocratic,” warning that it undermines parliamentary accountability.
The Speaker’s unilateral decision, taken on January 31, 2025, has sparked concerns within the NPP, which views the move as an attempt to silence opposition voices in the House. The party insists that such actions weaken the Minority’s ability to hold the government accountable.
The NPP’s leadership has pledged its full support to the affected MPs and the Minority Caucus, endorsing their press conference scheduled for February 3 and any subsequent actions they take to challenge the suspension.
According to the statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP considers the Speaker’s decision a violation of the Constitution and the principles of natural justice. The party reaffirmed its commitment to standing with all 88 of its MPs to resist any form of repression in Parliament.
“The Party sees this selective and autocratic posture of the Speaker as very dangerous, with all these actions packaged to cow the Minority into submission, consequently weakening its potential to hold the government accountable”.
“In this spirit, the Party wishes to state that it does not accept the decision of the Speaker to suspend its Members; which is in flagrant disregard for the Constitution of the Republic and as well as the rules of Natural Justice”.
