Veteran Ghanaian Musician Kojo Antwi has opened up about the creative freedom that has shaped his music career, saying working independently gave him control that many artistes lose when they rely heavily on promoters and producers.
The highlife and Afrobeat musician, popularly known as Music Man, shared the reflections during an appearance on Starr Chat with Bola Ray on Thursday, February 12, 2026.
According to him, while promoters and producers play important roles in the industry, they can sometimes influence an artiste’s direction in ways that limit originality.
“Promoters and producers are good, but they will sometimes tell you, ‘Oh, have you heard that song? Go home and come to us with such a song.’ I believe that takes away more of your freedom,” he said.
Kojo Antwi explained that his ability to finance most of his projects allowed him to make decisions without pressure, including how his albums were packaged.
“I was doing most of my albums without pictures,” he said, noting that being financially independent helped him resist demands to place his image on album covers.
“I feel blessed to be having that freedom to do that,” he added.
He further said the independence he enjoyed also extended to choosing song titles, stressing that creative freedom has remained a key part of his journey as an artiste.
