Street begging has long been a persistent issue in Ghana, particularly in the Western Region.
However, recent reports indicate that the situation has evolved into a more organized operation, with individuals allegedly profiting from the exploitation of persons with disabilities.
Mr. Richard Asare, President of the Ghana Federation for Persons with Disabilities in the Western Region, revealed that foreign nationals with disabilities are reportedly being brought into the country and strategically placed on the streets to solicit alms.
“This has become a business. Those behind it bring these disabled individuals into the country and station them at various spots to beg. At the end of the day, they collect the money and give them a token. It’s a well-organized scheme,” he explained.
He further stated that the matter has been reported to the appropriate authorities, and stakeholders are awaiting decisive action to tackle the situation.
“Leaders at the national level have lodged complaints with the police, who have assured us that steps are being taken. However, we are hoping immigration authorities will intervene and prevent the continuous influx of these individuals into the country,” he added.
