We Aren’t Responsible for Budgeting – GRNMA on 2026 Proposal

GRNMA has firmly rejected the government's proposal to delay the implementation of their revised conditions of service to 2026

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has firmly rejected the government’s proposal to delay the implementation of their revised conditions of service to 2026, insisting the agreement must be honoured without excuse.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Tuesday, June 10, GRNMA’s National Public Relations Officer, Joseph Krampah, dismissed suggestions that the Association could wait for their demands to be factored into the 2025 mid-year budget.

According to Mr. Krapah, the Association is not responsible for budgeting timelines.

He stressed that once an agreement is signed by both the employer and the leadership of the union, it becomes a binding statutory obligation.

He said, “We are not responsible for period budgeting. What we know is that we signed a condition of service. And this condition of service, if it is signed, it’s not only for nurses and midwives. All public sector workers, they all have their condition of service. You have the Ghana Medical association. We have the health service workers union, they all have their condition of service. And immediately, they finish the negotiations, and then the employer signs, together with the leadership of this association. It becomes a statutory body that should be recognized by the employer. So we have done all these things. And it’s left with the implementation.”

The comments follow a high-level emergency meeting on Monday, June 9, between GRNMA leadership, the Ministry of Health, and other key stakeholders.

The meeting failed to resolve the ongoing strike, as nurses and midwives continue to demand the immediate implementation of their agreed conditions of service.

The Association maintains that the government’s failure to include their revised terms in the 2025 budget is unacceptable, especially when other unions have had their demands honoured.

Health services across the country remain strained as the nationwide strike continues with no clear indication of when it will be called off.
