Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has reiterated their decision to reject government proposal to defer implementation of their revised conditions of service to 2026.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, GRNMA’s National Public Relations Officer, Joseph Krampah, expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to include their revised conditions of service in the 2025 budget.
He explained that the GRNMA submitted its proposals as far back as January and questioned the government’s delay in incorporating them into the national budget.
Krampah further noted that the strike has exposed the Ministry’s inaction and inconsistent handling of labour-related concerns.
“We met yesterday to meet the services and salary commission and other stakeholders. And what came out of it was that they have not inputted our condition of service into the budget for this year. So we should wait for 2026. And we said no way. We wouldn’t understand it. Because we gave this document to you during a short period in January. So what prevented you from adding it up to your budget?”
“You cannot come and tell us that you have not added it to it. So we should go back to work. We can’t do that. And we’ve seen that this strike has been able to expose the ministry, our employer, what it is doing. We’ve been asking, that you are writing letters to finance minister to actually instruct their control. Oh, today form a committee. Not knowing you have not even added it to your budget. How do you feel? We are all in the country. Some go on strike because of these allowances. Yet, you didn’t capture that in your budget, but you were able to settle them. So what happened is that we said we would not agree and that is it.”

This comes after an emergency meeting on Monday, June 9, brought together officials from the Ministry of Health, GRNMA leadership, and other key stakeholders in a last-ditch effort to end the impasse.
However, negotiations failed to yield a resolution as the Association remains on strike.
The GRNMA has not indicated when the strike will be called off, leaving health services across the country in a precarious state as the standoff continues.
