President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated the call for reparative justice for Africans and people of African descent, stating that Africa’s voice on the matter is no longer a “whisper” but a “unified demand.”
Speaking at the just-ended 7th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting between the African Union (AU) and Regional Economic Communities in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, the Ghanaian President described the 2025 AU theme, “Justice for Africans through Reparations,” as a reaffirmation of the continent’s collective resolve.
“Africa’s call for reparative justice is no longer a whisper. It is a unified demand, grounded in historical truth, moral clarity, and our unwavering commitment to dignity,” he said.
President Mahama emphasised that restitution is not only about financial compensation but also about restoring identity, healing civilisational wounds, and reclaiming agency in shaping Africa’s destiny.
“We cannot speak of development without identity or speak of unity without acknowledging the erasure that has fractured our heritage,” he noted, quoting Marcus Garvey: “A people without the knowledge of their past history, their origin, and culture is like a tree without roots.”

He encouraged the development of stronger partnerships with the Caribbean community (CARICOM), particularly through the AU–CARICOM Joint Mechanism and the upcoming AU–CARICOM Summit in Addis Ababa in September 2025.
“A side event themed ‘High-Level Panel on Reparations, Memory, and Sovereignty’ will be convened at the AU–CARICOM Summit to showcase this all-important issue,” he stated.
Mahama also announced that Ghana and Togo will co-sponsor a high-level event at the UN General Assembly in September 2025 to reinforce the global case for reparations.

“As we do more to correct historical wrongs… we are reaffirming our sovereignty, we are reigniting the flame of dignity that has always burned within the African soul,” President Mahama said, affirming Ghana’s full commitment to the reparations agenda.
