Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has called for the elimination of the activities of middlemen, popularly referred to as ‘goro boys,’ from Ghana’s company registration processes.
He expressed concern that these intermediaries perpetuate bribery and corruption by exploiting delays in the system to demand illegal fees from unsuspecting clients.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of a 10-member Board of Governors for the Office of the Registrar of Companies, Dr. Ayine stressed that the actions of ‘goro boys’ raise the cost of company registration and undermine confidence in public institutions.
“I want to pledge that we have to eliminate the goro boys from the system because they raise the cost of company registration. What they end up doing is taking fees from clients and then passing part of it to someone in the system to speed up the process, which in turn encourages bribery,” he said.
Dr. Ayine further explained that if bottlenecks in the registration process are eliminated and digital systems made more accessible, businesses would no longer have to rely on middlemen to register their companies. He maintained that such reforms would help improve transparency, reduce corruption, and ensure a level playing field for entrepreneurs.
The newly inaugurated board has been tasked with overseeing reforms at the Office of the Registrar of Companies to streamline operations and strengthen Ghana’s business registration framework.
