The Minority in Parliament has extended humanitarian support to displaced Ghanaians in Côte d’Ivoire, donating CFA 2 million to refugees currently sheltering in Vonkoro, Bouna Region, after the Gbinyiri conflict in the Savannah Region.
The violent clashes, which claimed more than 40 lives and displaced over 40,000 people, forced an estimated 13,000 Ghanaians to flee across the border into Côte d’Ivoire, while others sought refuge in Burkina Faso.
Leading a four-member delegation, Deputy Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, presented the donation on behalf of the Minority.
said the gesture was to ease the hardship refugees are enduring while awaiting a permanent resolution to the conflict.
“We are here on behalf of the Minority in Parliament and Ghanaians in their entirety to empathize with you for the ordeal you’re all going through as a result of this conflict. We are making this donation to you to help alleviate some of the challenges you’re facing.
It is our hope that sooner than later, a lasting resolution will be reached for all of you to return home. Do accept this cash donation of CFA2 Million from us and use it to support yourselves” he said.
Refugee leader Kawuro Kwasi David, who is also the Assemblyman for Bale Electoral Area in Bole, received the donation and expressed gratitude, describing the intervention as timely.
“We can only be grateful to you for your kind gesture as this will go a long way towards making sure that our stay here becomes comfortable. We do appreciate this from the Minority MPs of our Parliament” he stated.
Some refugees, visibly encouraged by the visit, voiced hope that the Minority’s advocacy would pressure the government to expedite efforts for their safe return.
