Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is urging strict safety measures on Ghana’s waterways, especially the use of life jackets, as she visits Kete Krachi in the Oti Region to console families affected by a recent Volta Lake boat disaster.
The tragedy, which occurred on Saturday, October 11, 2025, claimed 15 lives, including 11 children. Rescue and recovery operations are still ongoing.
Speaking to residents of the Okume Community during her visit on Tuesday, October 14, the Vice President emphasized the importance of life jackets for all passengers.
“I will urge you all to ensure that everyone who boards your [boat operators] boat wears a life jacket. Let us work together to make boat accidents a thing of the past,” she said, while extending condolences to the victims’ families.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang described the incident as a national tragedy, noting that it underscores the urgent need for vigilance and adherence to safety protocols.
The Vice President’s visit, she said, serves as both a mourning and awareness-raising initiative, highlighting that preventive measures like mandatory life jackets can save lives and help avoid future accidents on Ghana’s waterways.
Government agencies, in collaboration with the Ghana Maritime Authority and the Oti Regional Coordinating Council, continue to investigate the cause of the accident and provide support to survivors.
