Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that the Government of Ghana will involve independent experts in analysing investigative reports into the death of Ghanaian national Nana Agyei Ahyia, who died in Latvia under unclear circumstances.
The Minister made this known after meeting the family of the deceased at the Foreign Ministry on Monday, December 22, where he briefed them on diplomatic and investigative interventions initiated since the tragedy.
Ablakwa said the Ministry acted swiftly by deploying a fact-finding mission from Ghana’s Embassy in Germany, which is concurrently accredited to Latvia.
He noted that the team has already submitted a preliminary report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He disclosed that Latvian authorities have confirmed investigations into Nana Agyei’s death are still ongoing, stressing that no final conclusions have yet been reached.
In a significant move, the Foreign Affairs Minister said he has formally informed the Latvian government of his intention to travel to Latvia to personally engage his counterpart and investigators overseeing the case.
Ablakwa added that representatives of Nana Agyei Ahyia’s family will be included in the delegation.
According to him, the government’s decision to involve independent experts is aimed at ensuring objectivity, credibility and justice, especially when the final investigative report from Latvian authorities is released.
The death of Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian living abroad, has sparked widespread concern, with many Ghanaians calling on the government to take a firm stance in protecting the rights and lives of citizens overseas.
The Foreign Ministry says it remains committed to pursuing the matter until clarity and justice are achieved.
