A fire outbreak has destroyed sections of the VVIP bus station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and causing panic among commuters.
Eyewitnesses and vendors at the scene reported that the fire started small but quickly spread.
One vendor, who witnessed the blaze, said, “The fire started about 30 minutes ago but was only brought under control around 11 minutes ago. Other firefighters had to help in quenching the flames.”
Tensions flared on the scene between a firefighter and a concerned resident.
The resident claimed the fire could have been controlled earlier, but the firefighter explained that their fire truck was faulty, making it difficult to respond promptly.
Firefighters are currently on the ground battling the flames, while police officers have been deployed to manage the crowd and maintain order at the scene.
Authorities are yet to determine the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.
