One person has been confirmed dead, with several others injured, following a confrontation between suspected illegal miners and the Ghana Police Service at Jacobu in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred during a police operation in the area and has been described by authorities as “unfortunate and avoidable.” The exact circumstances surrounding the clash are still under investigation.
In a statement, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and sympathised with all those affected.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and sympathise with all persons affected by this incident,” the statement said.
He added that government’s thoughts and prayers are with those injured and wished them a speedy recovery.
Dr. Amoakohene urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and comply with lawful orders, cautioning against actions that could endanger lives.
“Citizens should under no circumstances confront the police or engage in actions that threaten public safety, as has been seen in circulating videos,” he stated.
The Minister also commended the Ghana Police Service for its efforts to maintain law and order, reaffirming government’s commitment to supporting the police and other security agencies in the discharge of their duties.
According to the statement, investigations into the incident are ongoing, and authorities have assured the public that anyone found to have acted unlawfully will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Dr. Amoakohene further appealed to community leaders, youth groups and other stakeholders in the Amansie Central District to help restore calm and ensure respect for lawful processes.
