Ministry for Works and Housing is intensifying efforts to protect the country’s vulnerable coastline from rising sea levels, flooding, and shoreline erosion.
Sector Minister, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, highlighted the progress of key coastal protection projects across the country.
“At Komenda, the final phase of the coastal protection works, including the construction of a critical bridge, has been completed. This intervention has improved local connectivity and enhanced livelihoods, particularly in fishing communities,” Mr. Adjei said.
The Ministry has also completed major works at Ningo–Prampram, where extensive dredging of the Djale Lagoon Basin has restored access to the beachfront and safeguarded residential areas.
At Elmina, the third phase of the New Takoradi Sea Defence Project has been finalized, protecting communities along the coast. Altogether, these projects have secured about 15km of coastline.
Ongoing works include the Dansoman Emergency Sea Defence, Dixcove, Anomabu, Cape Coast, Aboadze, and Axim coastal protection projects, with completion levels ranging from 12% to 95%.
The Housing Minister further confirmed that Phase 2 of the Blekusu Coastal Protection Project has commenced and is currently 25% complete.
“These initiatives demonstrate the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and livelihoods along Ghana’s vulnerable coastline,” he said.
The Minister emphasized that coastal protection is part of the broader mandate of the Works Sub-sector, which also covers urban drainage systems to mitigate flood disasters, maintenance of government properties, and the delivery of quality architectural and engineering services.
