The Ashanti Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service has destroyed illicit drugs worth several million Ghana cedis following sustained anti-drug operations across the region.
The narcotics—comprising tramadol, cannabis, male enhancement products, and other prohibited substances—were seized during various operations conducted between 2025 and 2026.
The destruction exercise was carried out after the unit obtained a court order in accordance with Section 37 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019).
Speaking after the exercise, the Commanding Officer of the Unit, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Frazer Nutakor, said the drugs were destroyed to prevent them from re-entering circulation and to underscore the Police Service’s commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking.
According to him, the substances were incinerated at the Oti Landfill site in the presence of officials from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Environmental Health Services, and members of the media to ensure transparency and accountability.
ASP Nutakor disclosed that suspects arrested in connection with the seized drugs are currently before the courts and are being prosecuted in line with the law.
He cautioned the public against drug abuse, noting that some individuals misuse drugs under the false belief that they enhance productivity or academic performance, without appreciating the serious health risks involved.
Reaffirming the unit’s resolve, ASP Nutakor said officers would remain relentless in arresting and prosecuting persons involved in the illicit drug trade to rid society of the menace. He stressed that drug abuse poses a serious threat to public health and national security.
