The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has confirmed that its officers attempted to arrest the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Hon. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in connection with an ongoing investigation.
In a statement, EOCO said the attempted arrest followed two invitations extended to the MP in February 2026 to assist with the investigation, which it said were not honoured.
The Office said it subsequently took steps to secure his attendance in accordance with the law, describing Wednesday’s attempted arrest as one of those lawful steps.
According to EOCO, the situation escalated during the attempted arrest, resulting in officers deciding not to proceed because a counter action could have endangered public safety.
“The arrest was not successfully completed as officers assessed that a counter action would have endangered public safety,” EOCO said.
The Office also said it had identified two persons who, based on the circumstances captured in video footage circulating on social media, are alleged to have actively intervened to facilitate the MP’s escape.
EOCO said the conduct of the two individuals is being assessed and that it would take such lawful steps as may be appropriate.
MP seeks sanctuary at Parliament
EOCO further disclosed that Hon. Baffour Awuah subsequently proceeded to the precincts of Parliament to seek sanctuary, although Parliament is currently on recess.
The anti-graft and organised crime agency said it recognises and respects the constitutional privileges and immunities of Members of Parliament and would conduct its operations strictly within the Constitution and applicable laws.
It, however, stressed that parliamentary membership does not automatically bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law.
“At the same time, EOCO will not take any step that is inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or any other protection provided by the Constitution,” the Office stated.
EOCO said the investigation remains active and that it would carefully review the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s incident, including available video evidence, to guide its next steps.
The Office reaffirmed its commitment to discharging its statutory responsibilities while respecting the Constitution, the rule of law and the institutional privileges of Parliament.
