The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has condemned the attempted arrest of Manhyia South MP and lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Accra High Court Complex.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, while Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah was at the court representing a client in his capacity as a lawyer.
EOCO said the attempted arrest was linked to an ongoing investigation and followed two invitations extended to the MP in February 2026, which it said he did not honour.
The Office described the attempted arrest as one of the lawful steps taken to secure his attendance.
Howvever, GBA in a statement dated Thursday, September 24, said it was concerned about the incident and videos circulating online showing another lawyer complaining of being assaulted.
The Association stressed that enforcement actions involving lawyers must respect due process and professional independence.
“While no individual is above the law, any investigation or enforcement action involving a member of the legal profession, especially when they are representing clients, must be conducted strictly in accordance with constitutional guarantees, applicable legal procedures, and respect for professional independence.”
The GBA warned that attempts to circumvent such safeguards could create a perception of intimidation and have a chilling effect on the legal profession.
It has therefore called on EOCO and other state institutions to ensure that their actions comply with due process, fairness and respect for the rights of persons involved.
“The rule of law demands not only that justice be done, but that it be seen to be done. The independence of the legal profession is a cornerstone of every democratic society and must be protected at all times.”
