Ghana, Egypt deepen cooperation in defence, pharmaceuticals and infrastructure

Mahama and El-Sisi discuss expanded cooperation in key strategic sectors.

President John Dramani Mahama and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi have agreed to deepen cooperation between Ghana and Egypt in defence, pharmaceuticals, trade and infrastructure.

The two leaders made the commitment during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 8th African Union Mid-Year Coordination Summit, held alongside the maiden Alamein Africa Forum in Egypt.

The meeting focused on strengthening the longstanding relationship between the two countries, with both leaders reflecting on the Pan-African ties established during the era of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and Egypt’s former President, Gamal Abdel Nasser.

The Presidency said the two leaders agreed that building on that historic foundation remains important in addressing current regional development challenges.

President Mahama thanked Egypt for its support for Ghana’s resolution on reparations at the United Nations and urged President El-Sisi to maintain the country’s backing as the international dialogue continues.

The two countries also discussed ways to boost bilateral trade and expand commercial activities, with pharmaceuticals emerging as a key area of cooperation.

Discussions centred on “streamlining and facilitating the registration of Egyptian pharmaceutical products in Ghana” to improve healthcare access and promote investment in the sector.

Defence and regional security were also major issues at the meeting.

President Mahama expressed Ghana’s desire to expand security cooperation with Egypt, citing the country’s advanced defence industry as a valuable model.

He called for broader collaboration in “intelligence sharing, capacity building, and counter-terrorism initiatives.”

The leaders also discussed support for the Sahel-Gulf of Guinea Accord and the development of social housing.

On infrastructure, President Mahama said Ghana is interested in learning from Egypt’s experience in executing mega-infrastructure projects.

The Presidency said Ghana specifically seeks to draw lessons from Egypt’s development of its New Administrative Capital as the country advances “its own strategic plans for a new capital city.”

The discussions form part of efforts to strengthen the historic Ghana-Egypt relationship while expanding cooperation in strategic sectors including trade, healthcare, defence and infrastructure.
