The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has met with the family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia to brief them on steps taken by the Government of Ghana following his death abroad.
The meeting was held on Monday, December 22, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Ablakwa first conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family before outlining actions undertaken by the Ministry since the incident.
Mr. Ablakwa disclosed that the Ministry promptly dispatched a fact-finding mission from Ghana’s Embassy in Germany, which holds concurrent accreditation to Latvia, to gather firsthand information on the circumstances surrounding Nana Agyei’s death.

He noted that the mission has since submitted a preliminary report to the Ministry.
The Foreign Affairs Minister further revealed that Latvian authorities have officially confirmed that investigations into the death of Nana Agyei Ahyia are still ongoing and have not been concluded.
As part of efforts to ensure transparency and justice, Mr. Ablakwa said he has formally notified the Latvian government of his decision to personally travel to Latvia to engage his counterpart and investigators handling the case. He added that members of the bereaved family will be part of the delegation.

He also assured the family that the Government of Ghana will engage independent experts to analyse all investigative reports, particularly the expected final report from Latvian authorities, to guide Ghana’s next steps in the pursuit of justice.
Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian national, was reported dead in Latvia under circumstances that have since raised public concern and calls for thorough investigations.
The case has drawn attention both in Ghana and abroad, with civil society groups and family members demanding accountability and clarity over the incident.
