Management of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has refuted claims that the facility is unable to process crude oil produced in Ghana, stating that the refinery was designed to handle the type of crude extracted from the country’s offshore oil fields.
Corporate Affairs Officer Godwin Mahama Ayaba said the refinery is built to process light sweet crude, which is the same grade produced from Ghana’s major oil fields.
According to him, TOR has previously refined crude sourced locally without any operational challenges.
He cited a previous arrangement in late 2016 when the Ministry of Energy supplied crude from the Tweneboa Enyenra Ntomme (TEN) Field to the refinery for processing. According to him, the crude was refined successfully.
Mr. Ayaba added that crude from both the Jubilee Field and the TEN Field falls within the light sweet crude category, which matches the refinery’s technical design.
He therefore dismissed suggestions that TOR’s equipment cannot process Ghanaian crude, describing such assertions as inaccurate.
Mr. Ayaba further revealed that discussions are ongoing among the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, government authorities, and TOR to arrange for the supply of crude from Ghana’s oil fields to the refinery.
He expressed optimism that an official announcement on the supply of local crude to TOR will be made soon, as the Energy and Green Transition Minister works to secure crude supplies both locally and internationally to support the refinery’s operations.
