The Electoral Commission (EC) is today, Friday, July 11, supervising a rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations across the Ablekuma North constituency, marking a critical step in resolving a months-long electoral impasse.
The rerun follows the EC’s announcement earlier this month that the results from 19 of the 37 polling stations in the constituency could not be properly verified during the December 2024 general elections.
While 18 stations had their results certified, the Commission said the remaining stations required fresh voting to ensure electoral integrity.
The decision, however, has been met with fierce opposition from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has accused the Commission of political bias and favouring the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The party described the rerun as “unlawful” and officially announced a boycott of the process, warning that it could set a dangerous precedent.
Despite this, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Afriyie, is taking part in the rerun—defying her party’s stance.
Her participation follows the dismissal of an injunction application she filed at the Accra High Court seeking to halt the rerun.
The court ruled that the EC has a constitutional mandate to ensure representation and that further delay would disadvantage constituents.
Addressing the media on the eve of the rerun, the EC’s Deputy Chair in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, dismissed all allegations of political interference.
The EC further assured voters and political stakeholders that all necessary security arrangements have been made in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service to ensure a peaceful, orderly, and transparent electoral process.
Ablekuma North has remained without a Member of Parliament since the 2024 elections, with legal wrangling between the NPP and NDC stalling the collation and final declaration of results.
The EC has expressed its determination to conclude the matter and restore parliamentary representation to the constituency.
