Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, has been remanded into police custody by the Accra Circuit Court following his arraignment on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.
The outspoken Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was arraigned after his arrest on charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace.
Presiding over the case, the court ordered that Abronye be kept in police custody and reappear on Friday, September 12, 2025.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed the development in a statement, noting that the decision was to allow for further investigations into the matter.
Following his arrest, Abronye’s legal team had earlier raised alarm over being denied access to their client and claimed his whereabouts were unclear.
His lawyer, Daniel Martey Esq. of Nkrumah & Associates, described the handling of the case as “very unprofessional,” alleging that Abronye was moved between offices without proper notice.
The latest court decision comes against the backdrop of revelations that Abronye had applied for political asylum abroad just days before his arrest.
In a letter dated September 5, 2025, he formally petitioned several foreign embassies, including those of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Côte d’Ivoire, as well as United Nations agencies.
In his asylum applications, he cited political persecution, unlawful arrests, and threats to his life as the main reasons for seeking protection outside Ghana.
Civil society has since reacted, with Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, calling on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the alleged threats Abronye referenced in his asylum submissions.
