The Executive Director of the Center for Public Opinion and Awareness, Michael Donyina Mensah, has commended the relative absence of voter inducement and vote-buying allegations during the New Patriotic Party’s recent national delegates’ conference.
Speaking on the outcome of the conference held on 3rd October 2026 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, Mensah noted that, unlike previous party elections, issues of monetisation of the process did not dominate public discourse this time.
“And the good thing is that for this time around, as someone who has spoken publicly against the monetization of our politics, for this time around, I didn’t hear too much of the vote-buying incidents, vote-buying, quota inducement and things like that,” he said.
This, he said, has made him happy.
“And for once, I am happy that we’ve had such a delegates conference, and vote-buying has not really captured the headlines. So it means that we are getting somewhere,” he stated.
Mensah, who has consistently criticised the practice of vote-buying in Ghanaian politics, expressed pleasant surprise at the lack of the usual post-election complaints about money changing hands among delegates.
“I’m also curious…is it because maybe they are in opposition or actually that culture has been nipped in the bud, or it has been so institutionalized that now it has become a topic again? Because I’m surprised that this particular election, issues of vote-buying, and ‘I received this, I didn’t receive this amount,’ nothing of that. So I would classify that as the good,” he added.
The conference saw the election of a new national executive team led by Mr. John Boadu as National Chairman, with Justin Frimpong Kodua retained or elected as General Secretary, among other positions.
The Ashanti Region Constituency Chairmen Caucus had earlier congratulated the new leadership and described the process as peaceful, transparent, and credible.
