The Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed that 20 people were rescued while three others died following the collapse of a three-storey building at Accra New Town.
According to the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Alex King Nartey, the structure—an uncompleted and abandoned building located within the premises of the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School—was being used at the time of the incident.
Emergency teams carried out intensive rescue operations through the night, working under floodlights to reach victims trapped beneath the debris. Some survivors were pulled out alive after being buried under the rubble.
Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak confirmed that the deceased—two women and a man—have yet to be identified, while the rescued victims are receiving treatment at various health facilities.
He noted that casualty figures were carefully verified before being released. “So far, information that has been cross-checked, double-checked… just to be sure that we don’t give any information that may be far away from the fact”, he said.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, National Disaster Management Organisation, and the National Ambulance Service supported the operation.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown, but authorities say investigations are underway, as rescue teams continue clearing debris to ensure no one remains trapped.
