The Executive Director of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. Rasheed Draman, has commended Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin for his decision to initiate an amendment to the Criminal and Other Offences Act to address the conduct of politicians during party primaries and other internal elections.
It follows Speaker Bagbin revealing a private Members Bill to be submitted to amend the Criminal and other Offences Act to include conducts of politicians during primaries and other elections.
Speaking to Starr News, Dr. Rasheed Draman urged that the proposed legal changes be carefully crafted to ensure they are clear, enforceable and capable of deterring wrongdoing.
“It is quite significant. I believe this has the potential to change the political landscape of our country, but on one condition: that the law is implementable.

We already have many laws in this country, yet people flout them without facing any consequences. If this private member’s bill becomes law and politicians collectively agree to ensure its strict enforcement, it could bring significant change to the way politics is conducted in Ghana.”
