The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has declared the Affirmative Action Bill currently before the house shall not be considered under a certificate of urgency.
The bill currently before the committee of Gender, Children and Social Protection was presented under a certificate of urgency.
Even though the bill which seeks to empower women is yet to be considered by the committee, the speaker has served notice there’s the need for comprehensive stakeholders consultation given the enormity of the legislation.
Speaking at the Star Ghana Foundation Speaker’s Breakfast Forum, Mr. Bagbin revealed the government is under pressure from the IMF to get the law passed adding the writings of the Bretton Wood institution are all over the 2024 budget.
The former Nadowli-Kaleo MP however insisted the attempt by the IMF to dictate to parliament on the Affirmative Action Bill will be resisted even if such a move results in his removal as speaker.
Mr. Bagbin also lamented over what he described as lack of support for the legislature especially financially. He attributed the corruption tag against MPs to the constant demands on them by constituents.
In buttressing his assertion on lack of regard for the legislature the speaker related to how the land on which his official bungalow is located was sold to a private developer until a search at the Lands Commission stopped such a sale.
