Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called on African media professionals to build a strong, pan-African media organization that could redefine how the world sees the continent.
He made this remark at the Broadcasting at the Crossroads forum organized by the Africa Media Bureau in Accra on Friday, September 26, 2025.
Kufuor stressed that Africa must reclaim the power to tell its own stories.
According to Kufuor, a central media hub—potentially in Accra—could bridge linguistic, regional, and cultural divides, fostering greater understanding among African nations.
“If the professional media people will find a way to establish a powerful media agency, say here in Accra—very African—to tell African stories, not just political, it could be economic, it could be social, it could be entertainment, it could be trade, it could be industry. I tell you, before you know it, the African in Nigeria, Nairobi, or South Africa—we would do better,” he said.
The former president warned that the continent’s image is still largely shaped by foreign media, which often misrepresents Africa and slows its development.
“Poor Africa so far has tended to be defined from outside. We are seeking our identity,” he said, noting that initiatives like the AfCFTA remain mostly on paper while global digital technology races ahead.
Kufuor also highlighted the lack of African control over digital platforms. “We talk platforms. How many of the platforms are managed and driven by us?” he asked.
He concluded that a pan-African media powerhouse could not only unify Africans but also project an authentic image of the continent to the world, celebrating its diversity, resilience, and potential.
