The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has called on regulators, broadcasters, and stakeholders to work together to restore sanity to Ghana’s media space and protect national values.
Speaking on Friday, September 26, at a high-level media forum in Accra organized by the Africa Media Bureau, Minister George condemned exploitative and immoral content on Ghanaian airwaves, highlighting the dangers of shows disguised as prophecy, fetish rituals, and sexually explicit relationship programs.
“We must work together within the remits of our mandates to ensure the protection and longevity of our democracy. You must be responsible in your broadcast, and I must exercise caution in overseeing my regulatory responsibilities,” he said, stressing that collective accountability is crucial.
He specifically called out charlatans pretending to be religious leaders, as well as unscrupulous fetish priests promoting money-doubling and get-rich-quick schemes.
Minister George warned that pornographic and sexually explicit content masquerading as adult relationship shows threatens the innocence of the nation’s airwaves.
“There must be sanity, and we must work together to achieve the same. We cannot put today’s profit ahead of tomorrow’s sanity. Let us agree to develop a roadmap together to clean up our airwaves,” he added.
The forum, held under the theme “Aligning Policy, Technology and Global Best Practices for a Resilient Media Landscape,” focused on how new technologies such as artificial intelligence and 5G, along with changing audience behaviors and regulatory challenges, are transforming content creation, delivery, and monetization in Ghana.
Minister George concluded by urging all stakeholders to collaborate in safeguarding ethical broadcasting standards, emphasizing that protecting the public and national values must take precedence over profit and sensationalism.
